Atletico Madrid delivered a stunning performance at Camp Nou, defeating a 10-man Barcelona side 2-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday.
Goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth gave Diego Simeone’s team a commanding advantage ahead of the second leg in Madrid.
Barcelona started the match brightly, with Marcus Rashford creating early chances down the left flank. Atletico, meanwhile, crowded the right side to contain teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, allowing Rashford slightly more space.
Despite his efforts, Rashford’s promising chances were either blocked or narrowly missed, including a disallowed goal for offside.
The turning point came in the first half when Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi fouled Giuliano Simeone in a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Initially shown a yellow card, VAR intervened and upgraded it to a red, reducing Barcelona to ten men. Alvarez stepped up to convert the resulting free-kick, sending the visitors into a 1-0 lead.
