
Senegalese-American singer Akon has spoken fondly about working with the late Michael Jackson, describing it as the proudest moment of his career.
Speaking on the latest episode of the We Need To Talk podcast, the ‘Oh Africa’ crooner said his photo with the pop icon remains his most cherished memory. He admitted that even as an established celebrity at the time, he felt like “a child” compared to Jackson, whom he grew up idolizing.
“I was so happy because I grew up looking up to him. He is like everybody’s Idol,” Akon said.

The 53-year-old also reflected on his role in promoting African music, noting that he once signed Nigerian Afrobeats stars, including P-Square and Wizkid. He clarified that his connection to Wizkid came through Banky W’s Empire Mate Entertainment, where the singer was signed at the time.
Akon praised Nigerians for their contribution to global music, stating that they are “the most intelligent people on the planet” and have taken Afrobeats to remarkable heights.
