
The Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki is in mourning following the death of its bishop, Peter Nworie Chukwu, who passed away at the age of 60.
According to an official statement released by the Diocese, the bishop died on April 10, 2026, while undergoing medical treatment.
The announcement was signed by the Vicar General, Donatus Oluwa Chukwu, and addressed to both clergy members and the lay faithful.
The Diocese expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the late bishop as a devoted servant of God who played a key role in strengthening the spiritual life of the Church.

Born on November 5, 1965, Bishop Chukwu was ordained into the priesthood in 1993. He later rose to become the third bishop of the Diocese, a position he assumed in August 2021.
Throughout his years of service, he was recognized for his dedication to pastoral work and his engagement with social issues affecting people in Ebonyi State.
The Diocese urged the faithful and the general public to keep the late bishop in their prayers, noting that funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course.
