The Labour Party (LP) has officially appointed Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as its National Leader, marking a significant development in the party’s leadership structure.
The decision was announced in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), where critical issues concerning the party’s stability, growth, and future direction were discussed.
According to the communiqué, members of the NWC unanimously agreed to recognize Governor Otti as the party’s National Leader.
The Labour Party also reacted to the recent defection of its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

While acknowledging his departure, the party extended goodwill to Obi and wished him success in his future political engagements.
In addition, the party announced the recognition of former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as its National Chairman. LP reaffirmed its commitment to the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which ruled that the tenure of Julius Abure as National Chairman had expired.
The party urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accord full recognition to Nenadi Usman and the party’s National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, in line with the court ruling.
Reiterating its commitment to internal democracy, the Labour Party stated that all forthcoming congresses and its National Convention would be conducted strictly in line with the party’s constitution, while encouraging members to actively participate in the process.
