APC Secretary to Wike: Resign Now and Focus on Rivers State

Nyesom Wike has come under fresh criticism over his continued involvement in political developments in Rivers State, with calls for him to step down from his role as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and concentrate fully on what has been described as his rising obsession with Rivers politics and the APC.

Reacting on Monday, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, said Wike has no basis to interfere in the party’s affairs until he formally becomes a registered member.

Basiru also dismissed Wike’s claim that his interest in the state is linked to the N600 billion reportedly in the Rivers government’s coffers, insisting that his own political positions are guided by principle rather than opportunism.

From available records, Wike is not a member of the APC, so I do not understand what authority he believes he has to interfere in the party’s internal matters. As the National Secretary of the APC, I find no justification for his constant remarks about my activities — whether in Rivers State or anywhere else in Nigeria.

The APC National Secretary clarifies that his authority extends beyond Osun State because he leads the party’s National Secretariat. He says Nyesom Wike has no standing to challenge or engage him on APC matters since Wike is not a party member.

He also rejects Wike’s suggestion that he is interested in Rivers State’s ₦600 billion allocation, insisting that his public record reflects integrity and dedicated service.

I am not an opportunist, and I have always stood firmly on principle, regardless of whose interests are affected.

Regarding his subtle threats, I put my trust in God — only God determines what happens to anyone, no matter their status.

I am among the young Nigerians who once stood up against military dictatorship, so I cannot be intimidated by anyone, no matter how highly placed. My record as National Secretary is transparent and credible, and I will not be questioned by someone who is not even a member of the APC.

Basiru concluded by advising him to step down from his position as Minister and devote his full attention to the Rivers State political matters he appears so fixated on.
