Tragedy struck Owode-Ede in Osun State after a two-storey shopping complex under construction collapsed, killing three people and leaving four others seriously injured.
The incident reportedly occurred late Friday night, October 30, 2026, trapping several workers who were staying inside the building ahead of the following day’s work.
The Osun State Commandant of the Federal Fire Service, Femi Isaac, confirmed the incident in an interview, stating that the agency received a distress call from the Divisional Police Officer of A Division around 11 pm and immediately deployed rescue personnel to the scene.
According to Isaac, the victims were tiling apprentices working on the project. Their supervisor was reportedly absent when the building collapsed.
He disclosed that three victims died, while five others were rescued alive and rushed to a private hospital in Ede. Four of the survivors sustained serious injuries, including fractures to their legs and hands, while one escaped unharmed.

Further details revealed that some of the workers had reportedly expressed concerns about the structural strength of the building before the tragedy.
Isaac said the most senior apprentice told rescuers that he had warned the others against sleeping on the upper floor shortly before the structure gave way.
Residents of the community also confirmed hearing a loud noise shortly before 11 pm, prompting people in the neighbourhood to rush to the scene.
The rescue operation involved personnel of the Federal Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, who worked through the night to recover victims from the rubble.
The incident has once again raised concerns about building safety, structural integrity and the need for strict compliance with construction standards to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
