The Okammelu family has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), seeking a supplementary investigation into the mysterious disappearance of the corpse of their late brother.
The family, through its counsel, Joseph Ofor, Esq., made the request in a letter addressed to the IGP on behalf of Chief Osita Okammelu, who had earlier petitioned the police over the incident.
Following the initial petition, the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IGP-IRT) was directed to investigate the matter and subsequently submitted its report. However, the family has expressed dissatisfaction with the findings, alleging significant omissions, inconsistencies and gaps in the investigation.
In a letter dated July 6, 2026, the family’s lawyer argued that the report raised serious concerns about possible criminal conspiracy and systemic failures but recommended the prosecution of only one individual.
The family also questioned why the report acknowledged that some aspects of the investigation remained outstanding while recommending immediate prosecution.
According to the petition, the investigation allegedly failed to adequately examine possible criminal responsibility on the part of all persons involved, despite identifying what the family described as serious administrative and operational negligence.

The lawyer further faulted the report for allegedly failing to draw comprehensive conclusions from financial records, call data records and other documentary evidence gathered during the investigation.
Another major concern raised by the family was the unresolved chain of custody of the deceased’s corpse, the roles of other listed suspects, possible institutional responsibility, and the circumstances surrounding the alleged unlawful release and subsequent disappearance of the remains.
The family disclosed that it had prepared a detailed analysis highlighting the perceived shortcomings of the IGP-IRT report, insisting that the identified gaps warranted a fresh and more comprehensive investigation.
Consequently, the family urged the IGP to direct a supplementary probe, with particular attention to the outstanding issues and the possible involvement of every person who may bear criminal responsibility.
The petitioners maintained that a thorough investigation was necessary to establish the truth, ensure accountability and restore public confidence in the investigative process.
They also stressed that justice must be served to all parties without fear or favour.
As of the time of this report, the petition did not indicate whether the Inspector-General of Police had acted on the request for a supplementary investigation.
