A Nigerian police officer has sparked public outrage after a viral video allegedly showed him attempting to shoot an unarmed young man during a heated confrontation along Orlu Road in Owerri, Imo State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, October 27, following a disagreement between police officers and some youths over allegations of assault and the destruction of a mobile phone.
In the video circulating online, the officer is seen holding a rifle and appearing to move towards using it against the civilian, while some of his colleagues attempt to restrain him and prevent the situation from escalating.
During the confrontation, one of the youths was heard questioning the officer over the alleged damage to his phone and the circumstances that led to the dispute.
“Why did you break my phone? Just because we didn’t have money to buy fuel for you?” the young man reportedly asked.
The youths allegedly accused the officer of assaulting them and damaging the phone, leading to a tense exchange between both parties.
