The Abia State Government has sealed a building constructed along a river bank in Afara, Umuahia, and ordered occupants to vacate the property immediately due to safety concerns.
The government said the action was taken to prevent a possible loss of lives, following concerns over the building’s location and lack of proper approval.
The Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this at Government House, Umuahia, while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Also speaking, the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Kingsley Agomuo, said the building had no approval and was erected at the edge of a river bank.

According to him, officials visited the property, advised the occupants to leave and subsequently sealed the building. He added that the owners had been engaged and asked to take the necessary steps.
Meanwhile, the state government said erosion control works are ongoing at Emede Ibeku community, where gully erosion has destroyed houses and portions of land over the years.
The government also announced plans to distribute three million insecticide-treated mosquito nets to residents as part of efforts to combat malaria across the state.
