The Enugu State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a commercial bus driver and his conductor following an alleged violent attack on police officers and the snatching of a service rifle.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspects are wanted for multiple offences, including conspiracy, serious assault, dangerous driving, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of a police firearm.
The incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. on July 9 at All Saints Roundabout along Abakaliki Road in Enugu. Police operatives from the Distress Response Squad were deployed after receiving reports that the duo had assaulted a traffic officer on duty.
Upon interception, the driver reportedly attempted to evade arrest. Witnesses say he initially slowed down, creating the impression of compliance, before suddenly accelerating in a bid to escape.

During a subsequent pursuit, the suspects allegedly threw the rifle out of the vehicle near the IMT Bus Stop before fleeing the scene. The weapon was later recovered intact, along with its ammunition.
The Commissioner of Police in the state has ordered a full-scale investigation and intensified efforts to apprehend the suspects. Authorities have also urged the fleeing individuals to surrender voluntarily, warning that all lawful measures will be employed to bring them to justice.
The police further cautioned members of the public against obstructing law enforcement officers in the discharge of their duties, emphasizing that such actions constitute serious criminal offences.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
