
Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have successfully foiled a planned attack on a palace in Essien Udim Local Government Area, arresting a 42-year-old suspect found in possession of a locally fabricated pistol.
The suspect, identified as Bassey Udo Idiong, was apprehended on the night of July 1, 2026, following a distress call received by the Command Control Room in Uyo.
According to police sources, the suspect had allegedly stormed the palace armed and issued threats to shoot.
Acting swiftly on credible intelligence, police operatives mobilised to the scene, where they professionally disarmed the suspect without any casualties. The locally made firearm was recovered and taken into custody as evidence.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the development in an official statement, describing the operation as a significant success in the Command’s ongoing efforts to combat criminal activities in the state.
“The prompt intervention of our officers prevented what could have resulted in a tragic loss of life. This underscores our unwavering commitment to responding decisively to every credible security threat,” the statement noted.

The suspect is currently in police custody, while a discreet investigation has commenced to uncover the source of the weapon, determine the motive behind the attack, and identify any possible accomplices or criminal links.
Authorities have assured that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the officers involved for their professionalism and rapid response.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and sustained operations aimed at eliminating illegal firearms and violent crime across the state.
The Commissioner also called on residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information, assuring that all reports would be handled with strict confidentiality.
He further warned criminal elements that there would be no hiding place for individuals seeking to disrupt the peace and security of Akwa Ibom State, reaffirming the Command’s resolve to protect lives and property.
