Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has stepped down from his role following his team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Dutch side was knocked out in the Round of 32 after suffering a penalty shootout defeat to Morocco, ending their hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
In a statement announcing his resignation, Koeman said it was the right time to leave the position, taking full responsibility for the team’s disappointing campaign.

“We all shared the dream of making history at this World Cup, but we fell short. No one is more disappointed than I am, and as head coach, the responsibility ultimately rests with me,” he said.
Koeman becomes the fourth national team coach to resign during the tournament following early exits. Earlier, Czechia’s Miroslav Koubek left after his side finished bottom of their group, Scotland’s Steve Clarke resigned after his team’s elimination, while South Korea’s Hong Myung-bo also stepped down following their group-stage exit.
The Netherlands’ departure marks another major upset at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Dutch Football Federation expected to begin the search for a new head coach ahead of future international competitions.
