The victory takes Mbappe’s tally to six goals at this year’s World Cup and 18 goals overall in World Cup history, leaving him just one goal behind the competition’s all-time leading scorer, Lionel Messi.
France controlled possession throughout the contest, limiting Sweden’s attacking opportunities while creating numerous chances of their own. Their clinical display ensured a comfortable passage into the knockout stage.
With the win, France will now face Paraguay in the Round of 16 on Saturday as they continue their bid for another FIFA World Cup title. Paraguay secured their place in the next round after defeating Germany in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw.
