Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Manuel Ugarte suffered a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The injury occurred during Uruguay’s group-stage defeat to Spain in Guadalajara. Ugarte twisted his knee awkwardly while attempting a tackle in the build-up to Spain’s decisive goal, forcing him to leave the field on a stretcher before halftime.
The 25-year-old was assessed by Uruguay’s medical team and is expected to return to Manchester for further examinations to determine the full extent of the injury and the most suitable treatment plan.

In a statement, Manchester United said Ugarte sustained a knee ligament injury during Uruguay’s World Cup clash with Spain. The club added that further assessment is ongoing and wished the midfielder a full and speedy recovery, assuring supporters that he will receive complete medical support throughout his rehabilitation.
Reports indicate the injury could keep Ugarte out of action for several months, although the exact recovery period will depend on the outcome of additional medical tests.
Ugarte joined Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 and has made 69 appearances for the club, scoring two goals. His future at Old Trafford has recently been the subject of speculation after limited involvement toward the end of the season.
The injury is a significant setback for both Uruguay and Manchester United, with the midfielder now facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
