Argentina captain Lionel Messi has emerged as the highest-rated player in FIFA’s latest Power Rankings following the opening round of group-stage matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Messi claimed the top spot in the attacking category after delivering a hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria. His performance accounted for all of Argentina’s goals and every shot the team placed on target during the match, underlining his decisive influence.

Other notable names in the attacking top 10 include Kylian Mbappe of France, Harry Kane of England, Erling Haaland of Norway, Vinicius Junior of Brazil, and Luis Diaz of Colombia.
FIFA said the rankings go beyond goals and assists, measuring how players create chances, progress attacks, and prevent opponents from scoring. The governing body added that the Power Rankings will continue to monitor player performances throughout the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The latest standings highlight Messi’s enduring influence on the world stage as he continues to lead Argentina’s quest for another World Cup title.
