Mexico City, June 18, 2026 — Colombia began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan at Mexico City Stadium, overcoming determined resistance from the tournament debutants.
The South Americans dominated possession for long periods but were made to work until the final moments before securing all three points.
Uzbekistan stunned Colombia after the hour mark when Abbosbek Fayzullaev struck in the 60th minute, canceling out Colombia’s first-half advantage and raising hopes of a famous result for the Central Asian side.
Colombia had taken the lead in the 40th minute through Daniel Muñoz, whose superb finish was created by star winger Luis Díaz. The goal capped an impressive first-half display from Néstor Lorenzo’s team, who controlled midfield and created numerous chances.
Despite Uzbekistan’s equalizer, Colombia responded strongly. Just five minutes later, Luis Díaz restored the lead with a clinical finish in the 65th minute, rewarding another outstanding performance from the Liverpool forward.
As Uzbekistan pushed forward in search of a second equalizer, Colombia sealed victory deep into stoppage time. In the ninth minute of added time, Jaminton Campaz found the net to make it 3-1 and put the result beyond doubt.
Díaz was named Man of the Match after contributing both a goal and an assist. His partnership with Muñoz proved decisive, while Colombia’s midfield controlled much of the contest despite Uzbekistan’s spirited challenge.
The result gives Colombia an ideal start to their World Cup campaign, while Uzbekistan can take encouragement from a competitive display against one of South America’s strongest sides.
