Portugal’s hopes of securing a crucial victory in Group K suffered a setback after they were held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo in their 2026 FIFA World Cup encounter in Houston.
The Portuguese side made a dream start, taking the lead just six minutes into the match. Winger Pedro Neto delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, allowing midfielder Joao Neves to rise highest and head home from close range.
Despite the early breakthrough, Portugal struggled to build on their advantage, managing only one shot on target throughout the contest.
Making their first World Cup appearance since 1974, DR Congo gradually settled into the game and grew in confidence. Their persistence paid off deep into first-half stoppage time when Yoane Wissa capitalized on poor marking from a corner kick, heading the ball in at the back post to level the score.

The Congolese side continued to threaten after the break and nearly completed a remarkable comeback when Cedric Bakambu struck the woodwork.
Portugal, meanwhile, looked to their captain Cristiano Ronaldo for inspiration. The veteran forward, making his sixth FIFA World Cup appearance—a record he shares with Argentina legend Lionel Messi—came close on two occasions but fired wide from promising positions.
The result leaves Portugal disappointed after failing to convert their dominance into victory, while DR Congo will take confidence from a spirited performance against one of the tournament favourites.
With the group stage intensifying, both teams will now turn their attention to their remaining fixtures as they continue their quest for a place in the knockout rounds.
