The Edda community in Ebonyi State has strongly called for a thorough investigation and full prosecution of all suspects linked to the brutal killing of four indigenes of Okporojo, warning against any attempt to grant clemency before justice is served.
The demand was made by Nzuko Edda, Abakaliki Branch, following a meeting held in Abakaliki on Tuesday.
In a communiqué jointly signed by its Chairman, Chief David Nkama, and Secretary, Chief Stanley Ngwu, the group firmly rejected calls for the unconditional release of individuals currently standing trial over the incident.
The association emphasized that granting clemency at this stage would undermine justice, weaken public confidence in the legal system, and hinder genuine reconciliation efforts in the state.
Their reaction follows reports of a communiqué issued by stakeholders and political leaders from the Amasiri community, as well as social media advocacy allegedly calling for leniency for the accused persons.
Nzuko Edda described such moves as insensitive to the pain of the victims’ families and warned against politicizing a matter already before the courts.
“Justice must not be sacrificed on the altar of political pressure or emotional sentiment. True peace can only be achieved through accountability and respect for the rule of law,” the statement read.

The group also expressed concern over the absence of meaningful reconciliation efforts from the Amasiri community since the incident, noting that premature calls for clemency could heighten tensions rather than promote peace.
Commending Governor Francis Nwifuru for his swift response, particularly the arraignment of 33 suspects following police investigations, the association said his actions have restored public confidence in the justice system.
The community urged the governor to remain steadfast and resist any pressure to release the suspects before the conclusion of their trial, stressing that justice is the foundation for lasting peace.
Despite the tragic losses, the people of Okporojo and the wider Edda community have remained calm and law-abiding, a stance the group attributed to their trust in the government’s commitment to justice.
Recall that the attack, which occurred on January 29, 2026, allegedly involved assailants from the neighbouring Amasiri community.
The incident led to the killing of four individuals, with reports of beheadings, abductions, and the destruction of about 29 homes, leaving many families displaced.
Describing the attack as one of the most devastating in recent times, Nzuko Edda reiterated that only justice, accountability, and fairness can guarantee lasting peace and security in Ebonyi State.
