Residents of Orhuwhorun community in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State staged a peaceful protest on Saturday over the deplorable state of their access road and the lack of basic infrastructure.
The demonstration was led mostly by women who marched through the community carrying placards with messages such as “Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Remember Orhuwhorun-Owhrode,” “Fix the Orhuwhorun–Owhrode Access Road,” and “The Orhuwhorun–Owhrode Road is Not Motorable.”
Protesters urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently intervene, saying the failed road has caused severe hardship, driven up transport costs, and crippled economic and social activities in Orhuwhorun, Owhrode, and neighbouring areas.
Speaking at the protest, High Chief Oghale Ighodakpo said the action was meant to draw government attention to the community’s plight. He noted that years of neglect have left traders, businesses, and residents struggling with daily losses.
Vice Chairman of Orhuwhorun Community, Chief Cyril Onojeghuo, added that the road has become a major obstacle to commerce and daily life, affecting students, workers, and motorists who depend on it.
Women leader Mrs. Victoria Ashakpoke described the situation as unbearable. She said many commercial drivers avoid the route because it is swampy and dilapidated, forcing residents to pay double transport fares.
“The daily challenges we face in accessing neighbouring communities are painful. Our economic activities, essential services, and the overall well-being of our people are being affected,” she stated.
The protesters called on the Delta State Government to prioritize the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Orhuwhorun–Owhrode Road, describing it as critical to the socio-economic development of the area.
