
Armed men suspected to be kidnappers have attacked a sand mining site popularly known as “Capo” in the Magbon Etido area of the Mowe/Ibafo axis in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, leaving a soldier dead and another injured.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
According to reports, the attackers stormed the dredging site in the early hours of Monday, opening fire during the assault.
One of the military personnel providing security at the site was killed on the spot, while another sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical attention.
A viral video circulating online showed the lifeless body of the deceased soldier, dressed in camouflage, being evacuated in a vehicle with security operatives and civilians present at the scene.

The police command, however, clarified that the attack was an isolated criminal incident and not linked to any bandit group activity, as earlier speculated in some quarters.
DSP Babaseyi stated that joint security teams comprising police and military personnel had been deployed to the area to track down the perpetrators.
“Preliminary findings do not indicate any connection between the incident and banditry activities in Ogun State. Investigations and tactical operations remain ongoing,” he said.
He further assured residents that the situation is under control, adding that security presence in the affected area has been reinforced to prevent further attacks.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the deadly assault.
