The Ebonyi State Police Command has cleared the wife of a serving police officer who was accused of attempting to abduct children in Amachi Amagu Community, Abakaliki Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, said investigations found no evidence linking Mrs. Chioma Nwewu to any child kidnapping incident.
According to the police, the incident occurred on March 20, 2026, when residents of the community confronted the woman after allegedly seeing her wandering around the area.
Suspecting her of being involved in child abduction, some members of the community reportedly attacked, stripped and tied her up before security operatives intervened.
Police officers responded to a distress call and rescued the woman. She was subsequently taken to the Central Police Station in Abakaliki, where investigations commenced.

The Command said community members who made the allegations were invited to provide statements and evidence to support their claims.
However, none came forward with information linking her to any criminal activity.
Investigators also visited the community several times but were unable to obtain any credible evidence connecting the woman to child abduction.
Further inquiries revealed that Mrs. Nwewu had reportedly been battling mental health challenges following a traumatic stillbirth. Police said she presented a medical report supporting her condition during interrogation.
The investigation also included a review of her bank records, which showed no suspicious financial transactions. According to the police, the funds in her account were accumulated gradually through proceeds from her trading business, which she had operated since 2015.
Following the findings, the Command concluded that there was no link between the woman and any child abduction case in Ebonyi State.
The police urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspicious activities to security agencies for proper investigation and lawful action.
