A tragic incident has shaken Calabar South in Cross River State after a commercial mini-bus driver allegedly stabbed a traffic enforcement officer to death during a routine operation.
The incident reportedly occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Monday near the Marian Hills area, where officials of the Cross River State Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMRA) were carrying out traffic control duties.
According to a statement released by the agency’s Public Relations Unit, the victim, identified as Mr. Akerete Okon, was attacked while on duty.
The agency alleged that the officer, who was unarmed and dressed in official uniform, was stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver by the driver without provocation.
Okon was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention but later succumbed to the injuries sustained during the attack.

The agency confirmed that the matter has been reported to the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies, calling for the swift arrest and prosecution of the suspect.
The agency also urged commercial drivers, transport unions, and the general public to cooperate with traffic officials and avoid acts of aggression, emphasizing that such attacks undermine public safety and law enforcement efforts.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River State, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, stated that preliminary reports indicate that the suspect, identified as Godwin Okobo, was involved in an altercation with TRAMRA officials, which led to the officer’s death.
He added that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and assured the public that justice will be pursued.
