
The Imo State Police Command has arrested two elderly men in Nekede, Owerri West Local Government Area, over the alleged abuse of a 7-year-old girl, sparking outrage within the community.
The suspects, identified as Godfrey Enyereibe Amadi, aged 70, and Sidney Onyemere, said to be in his late 60s, are reportedly members of the Council of Elders in Umuezereokam Village, Umuoma Autonomous Community.
According to community sources, the alleged incidents occurred on multiple occasions and in different locations. The matter reportedly came to light after the young victim initially confided in members of the village youth wing.
A resident, Mr Oparaku, confirmed that the arrests have triggered strong reactions among community members, with many demanding justice and accountability.
He stressed that no individual should be shielded from the law, regardless of status or position.
The youth president of the community, Okechukwu Ozioma, alongside other youth leaders, called for a transparent and thorough investigation.
They also alleged that there had been previous attempts to protect the suspects due to their influence within the elders’ council.

The victim’s mother, Mrs Chizoma Ndukuba, expressed deep distress over the incident and urged authorities to ensure justice is served.
She emphasized that holding the perpetrators accountable is crucial to safeguarding other children in the community.
Further allegations from a community leader suggest that one of the suspects had previously been accused of similar misconduct involving minors, raising concerns about a possible pattern of behavior.
Authorities confirmed that the case is currently being handled by the State Police Command in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs, Social Development, and the Child Protection Network.
The child is reportedly receiving medical care, with further evaluations underway to assess her condition.
The incident has intensified calls for stronger protection of children and stricter enforcement of laws against abuse in local communities.
