The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Nwankpu James after a disturbing video showing him abusing a child surfaced online. The footage, which went viral on social media, captured the suspect handling the child in an inhumane manner while the child lay on bare ground in Isohumini Agbaja Community, Izzi Local Government Area.
Following the circulation of the video, the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, Hope Urunwa Okafor, directed officers to track down the suspect and rescue the child immediately. Acting swiftly on the order, police operatives traced both the suspect and the child’s parents to the community, where the arrest was made and the child was safely recovered.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue. The rescued child has been taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, for urgent medical care.
