A medical doctor who was abducted in Anambra State has regained his freedom after days in captivity, bringing relief to the medical community and residents of the state.
Dr. Edwin Emegakor, the Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital in Nkpor, was kidnapped on May 7, 2026, by gunmen reportedly dressed in security uniforms.
The attackers stormed the hospital premises after working hours, held staff at gunpoint, and confiscated their phones before taking the doctor away.
His release was confirmed on Sunday by the Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Anambra State chapter, Dr. Princeton Okam.

According to him, the doctor was freed with the assistance of security operatives and has since reunited with his family in good health.
The abduction had sparked outrage among medical professionals in the state, with the NMA threatening to embark on an indefinite strike if their colleague was not released within 48 hours.
However, following the positive development, the association is expected to review its planned industrial action.
Dr. Okam expressed gratitude to all those involved in securing Emegakor’s release, while also urging the Anambra State Government to strengthen measures to protect lives and property.
The incident once again highlights growing concerns over insecurity and the targeting of professionals in parts of the country.
