Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, have suffered a setback in their preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after forward Esther Okoronkwo was ruled out due to injury.
Okoronkwo, who plays for AyFC Toronto, picked up a meniscus injury during her club’s league match against Halifax earlier this week. Medical reports indicate she will be sidelined for approximately six weeks as she begins recovery and rehabilitation.

The 29-year-old attacker, Esther Okoronkwo, is expected to miss a crucial period of preparation for the tournament, although there is optimism she could regain full fitness before the competition kicks off in Morocco on July 25, 2026.
Despite the injury concern, team officials remain hopeful that the forward will recover in time to be considered for selection. Okoronkwo played an important role in Nigeria’s success at the previous WAFCON edition, contributing goals and assists that helped the Super Falcons secure the title.
Her temporary absence is seen as a blow to the team’s attacking depth, but the coaching crew is expected to monitor her recovery closely as preparations continue ahead of the continental championship.
