The Imo State Police Command has begun a manhunt for kidnappers following the abduction of a 17-year-old student of Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Mary Ezinwayi Uzoma.
The undergraduate, a 100-level Microbiology student, was reportedly kidnapped along the FUTO/Ihiagwa Road in Owerri West Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, said operatives were immediately deployed to the scene in collaboration with local vigilante groups to carry out extensive search operations in nearby bushes and surrounding areas.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, has ordered the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to take over the case, stressing that efforts are underway to ensure the victim’s safe return and the arrest of the perpetrators.
According to Okoye, the command has also strengthened intelligence-led operations in partnership with other security agencies, while increasing security presence across the FUTO axis and neighbouring communities.
“The CP has reinforced security deployment across the FUTO axis and adjoining communities, with sustained patrols, surveillance, and visibility policing already ongoing,” the statement said.
The police reassured students, school authorities, and residents of their commitment to maintaining safety and urged anyone with useful information to report to the nearest police station or contact the command through its emergency line.
The abduction has heightened concerns over security in the area, particularly among students and residents.
