FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has emphasized the urgent need for experienced leaders within the squad if the club is to achieve its long-standing ambition of winning the UEFA Champions League.
Speaking after Barcelona’s recent quarter-final exit from the competition at the hands of La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid, Flick admitted that the absence of key influential players in crucial moments played a significant role in their elimination.
The German tactician noted that injuries to important figures such as Frenkie de Jong and Raphinha weakened the team during decisive stages of the competition.
He stressed that success at the highest level in European football requires not only talent but also strong on-pitch leadership, especially in knockout rounds.
“It is very important to have all players available during the business end of the season,” Flick explained, adding that the squad lacked enough vocal leaders during critical Champions League matches.

Flick highlighted that last season’s team benefitted from experienced figures like Íñigo Martínez, who provided stability and direction on the pitch.
According to him, Barcelona’s current squad, largely made up of young talents from the club’s academy, still needs time to develop maturity in high-pressure situations.
Despite the setback, the Barcelona coach remains optimistic about the future, insisting that the team has a strong foundation to build on. He believes the club can still compete at the highest level if the right decisions are made in the transfer market and the squad continues to grow.
“We have a fantastic team for the future, but we must learn from these defeats,” Flick said, while also expressing hope that his contract will be extended as he continues his project at the club.
Barcelona are currently focused on retaining their domestic league title, where they remain in a strong position at the top of the table with just a few games left in the season.
Flick concluded by reiterating his belief that with proper leadership and squad reinforcement, Barcelona can once again become serious contenders for Europe’s most prestigious trophy.
