The Abandoned Road in Lagos Community
Residents of Alakuko in Ijaye-Ojokoro Local Government Area of Lagos State have raised alarm over the deteriorating condition of the Baale-Animashaun Road, calling on the state government to urgently intervene.
Speaking in separate interviews, the residents described the road as a “death trap,” lamenting that years of neglect have led to severe economic and mobility challenges within the community.
A resident, Comrade Abayomi Oguntuase, disclosed that the road has remained in a deplorable state for over six years despite repeated appeals to authorities.
According to him, previous responses from officials have been inadequate and failed to address the root of the problem.
“The last time we raised concerns, officials only dumped large stones on the road as a temporary fix. But that is not a solution. What we need is proper rehabilitation,” he said.
Oguntuase noted that the condition of the road has made movement extremely difficult, with motorists frequently experiencing damage to their vehicles.

“You can hardly drive through without damaging your tyres. This has created serious challenges for both residents and business owners. Economic activities in the area are suffering,” he added.
He also criticised the ongoing drainage construction along the road, questioning the logic behind the project without corresponding road repairs.
“They are building a massive drainage near the expressway, yet the road itself is in terrible condition. It feels like putting the cart before the horse,” he said.
The resident further warned that such planning could lead to wasted resources if the drainage structure has to be dismantled when road repairs eventually begin.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the road, Oguntuase explained that Baale-Animashaun Road serves as a vital alternative route linking parts of Ogun State, including Sango, to Lagos, especially during heavy traffic on the expressway.
Another resident, Ade Makinde, echoed similar concerns, stressing the road’s economic significance and the daily hardship its poor condition has imposed on commuters and business operators.
The residents collectively urged the Lagos State Government to prioritise the reconstruction of the road to ease transportation challenges and restore economic activities in the area.
