Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has finally revealed why he chose to opt out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a decision that left many fans surprised.
The Udinese shot-stopper was notably absent from Nigeria’s squad for the tournament held in Morocco, sparking speculation about his omission.
Speaking with Kicker, the 26-year-old explained that his decision was intentional and focused on rebuilding his career after a challenging period.
Okoye had missed the start of the 2025/26 season due to a suspension linked to an alleged betting scandal, which kept him away from competitive football.
According to him, staying back was the best option to regain full fitness and sharpness rather than competing for a place as a backup goalkeeper.

“Since I was not Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, I believed it was better to remain at Udinese, work on my form, and also show appreciation to the club for standing by me during a difficult period,” Okoye stated.
He also emphasized his desire to repay Udinese for their support during his absence, describing the club as instrumental in helping him get back on track.
With his fitness now improving, Okoye is expected to return to action as the Super Eagles prepare to face Iran in an international friendly in Antalya, Turkey.
His return could signal a fresh start for the goalkeeper as he looks to reclaim his place in the national team.
