A young man identified as Opeyemi Lawal has reportedly died after he was allegedly beaten by car park officials at the Marina car park in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State.
The incident was said to have occurred on Sunday after Lawal was accused of stealing a mobile phone belonging to one of the car park attendants.
According to eyewitnesses, suspicion fell on him after the phone reportedly went missing within the car park, prompting officials to confront him over the alleged theft.
Sources said the situation quickly escalated when two car park officials allegedly restrained Lawal and began to assault him while demanding that he confess to the theft and return the missing phone.
Details of the incident surfaced on Monday after a social media user, Sheriff Ojon, shared a post claiming that the officials tied the victim’s hands and legs before repeatedly beating him despite pleas from residents and traders in the area to release him.

According to the account, the victim reportedly begged the attackers to stop, saying he was about to die, but the pleas were allegedly ignored.
An eyewitness alleged that one of the assailants, identified only as “Alhaji,” refused to untie the victim even as people around continued to plead with him to stop the assault.
The witness further claimed that the suspect insisted on continuing the beating because the victim had insulted him two days earlier during an argument at the park.
In a video circulating online, a woman who claimed to have witnessed the incident said several traders, particularly women selling clothes around the car park, begged the attacker to free the victim, but he allegedly refused.
Photos shared online after the incident showed the victim lying lifeless with visible bruises on parts of his body.
The development sparked outrage among residents, with some staging a protest at a nearby police division on Monday, demanding justice over the young man’s death.
When contacted for a reaction, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, did not respond to calls and messages as of the time this report was filed.
The incident has again raised concerns over violent conduct by some transport and car park officials.
In September 2025, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Shamsideen Adio, was arrested by police in Lagos after a man reportedly died following an alleged assault by him.
