The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the lawmaker representing Obubra I State Constituency, Dickson Agbor, indefinitely over allegations of domestic violence against his wife.
The suspension followed reports that the legislator allegedly assaulted his wife during a domestic dispute, an incident that reportedly sparked public outrage across the state.
During plenary, lawmakers described the alleged physical attack as unacceptable, stressing that domestic violence in any form contradicts the moral and ethical standards expected of public office holders.
A motion condemning the alleged assault was moved and unanimously adopted, with members insisting that the House must act decisively to protect its integrity and send a strong message against gender-based violence.

After deliberations, the Assembly resolved to suspend Agbor from all legislative duties pending the outcome of a formal investigation.
An ad hoc committee was constituted to thoroughly probe the domestic violence allegations and present its findings for further legislative action.
He was subsequently escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms in compliance with the directive.
Speaker Elvert Ayambem emphasised that the House would not condone any behaviour capable of bringing the legislature into disrepute, particularly allegations bordering on domestic abuse, which he described as a serious societal concern.
Earlier, Bassey Otu and his wife, Eyoanwan Otu, had condemned the alleged incident, describing it as irresponsible and unacceptable.
However, in a statement, Agbor’s wife, Glory Agbor, appealed for privacy, stating that the matter had been resolved within the family.
She maintained that they were now at peace, apologised to her husband and family, and announced her withdrawal from the Legislators’ Wives Association.
The suspension remains in effect pending the outcome of the investigative committee’s report.
