
The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has reportedly refused to issue Nurse Olamide Thomas her BSc Nursing certificate after she exposed alleged negligence by the university that contributed to the deaths of nursing students.
Thomas, the National Coordinator of the Elegant Nurses Forum (ENF), revealed that unsafe practices and systemic failures within the institution directly endangered students’ lives. She highlighted that “the deaths of the eight nursing students could have been prevented if proper safety measures and attention had been applied by the university authorities.”
The Socialist Workers League (SWL) condemned LAUTECH’s actions, calling the withholding of Thomas’s certificate “totally unacceptable” and demanding its immediate release.

They praised her advocacy, saying she has been “a beacon of hope for thousands of nurses and students, conscientiously bringing violations of human, labor, and trade union rights to light.”
SWL also urged the university to focus on addressing the issues raised rather than targeting Thomas. The group called for an investigation into the deaths, as well as reports of financial misconduct and disrespect toward students, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability.
Finally, SWL appealed to trade unions, civil society organizations, and the Oyo State government to intervene and ensure the university ends attempts to suppress Thomas’s activism.
