Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Rema recently gave fans a rare glimpse into his pre-performance routine. Speaking to Dazed during Milan Fashion Week, where he graced the runway for Diesel, Rema revealed that his preparations go beyond just music and choreography.
Before stepping on stage, Rema said he takes a sip of tequila, smokes a cigarette, and spends a moment in prayer.
“A little Tequila, a little cigarette, pray, tap in with the team and make sure everything is on cue,” he explained.
These rituals, he says, help him center himself and manage the high-pressure environment of live performances.
Rema also emphasized the importance of working closely with his team. He conducts thorough sound-checks to ensure every technical detail is perfect and to keep the energy of the crowd alive.

When asked about music inspiring him lately, Rema shared that he’s been drawn to Sudanese cultural live music, a source of creativity that fuels his own sound.
Despite his disciplined approach to performing, he candidly admitted that smoking remains his “biggest vice,” showing that even stars have their quirks.
This peek behind the scenes not only shows Rema’s commitment to his craft but also the personal habits that keep him grounded in the chaos of fame and international stages.
