A Nigerian fashion designer based in the United States, Sheriff Shittu, has been killed in a shooting at a nightclub in New York City.
The 30-year-old was shot in the early hours of February 14 during a birthday celebration at Quilox Restaurant and Lounge in the East Flatbush neighbourhood of Brooklyn.
According to local reports, the incident happened around 4:25 a.m. when a man who was being escorted out of the venue by security allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire.
Witnesses said the violence followed a dispute involving an intoxicated patron who had reportedly been causing a disturbance inside the club. The suspect was accused of acting disorderly and inappropriately touching some female guests, including Shittu’s girlfriend, which led to a confrontation.
Shittu had attended the celebration with his younger brother, Fawaz Shittu. Recounting the incident, Fawaz told reporters he tried desperately to revive his brother after the shooting.

The victim’s family is demanding justice and questioning how the gunman was able to enter the club with a weapon.
“We don’t know how security failed to properly search him before he brought a gun inside,” Salem Shittu, another brother of the deceased, said. He added that the suspect fired the shots while being led out of the venue.
Police said the gunman fled the scene and remains at large. Shittu was taken to One Brooklyn Health–Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Family members described him as an ambitious designer working to build his career in the United States. Authorities have launched a manhunt as investigations continue.
