
Actor Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan in the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has died at the age of 53, according to reports from U.S. media outlets.
The actor had revealed in 2025 that he was battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological condition.
His family confirmed his passing in a statement released on Thursday, saying he died peacefully in the afternoon after a courageous battle with the illness.
Born in San Francisco, Dane began his acting career with a guest appearance on the popular teen sitcom Saved by the Bell in 1991.

He rose to international fame in 2006 after joining Grey’s Anatomy, where he portrayed the charming and confident plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Sloan. Dane appeared in 139 episodes of the series and remained a fan favourite until his departure in 2021.
Beyond Grey’s Anatomy, he featured in the fantasy drama Charmed, starred as Captain Tom Chandler in the action series The Last Ship, and later appeared in the HBO series Euphoria.
Tributes have begun to pour in from colleagues and fans around the world, celebrating Dane’s career and the impact of his performances on television. He is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their children.
