Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is no longer in contention for the managerial role at Olympique Marseille after the Ligue 1 side confirmed the appointment of a new head coach.
Marseille had been searching for a replacement following the dismissal of Roberto De Zerbi two weeks ago. The club’s decision to part ways with De Zerbi was prompted by disappointing performances and inconsistent results, which left the team struggling to meet expectations in the French top flight.
The management opted for a change in leadership in a bid to stabilise the squad and revive their campaign.
Following De Zerbi’s exit, Chelle emerged as one of the leading candidates for the job.
The speculation intensified due to his strong ties to French football and his recent move to a new football agency, a development often interpreted as a signal of a potential career shift.
Since the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in January, Chelle’s future has been the subject of growing uncertainty.

He has been linked with national team vacancies in Angola, Tunisia, and Algeria, alongside interest from Marseille.
However, the French club have now ended all speculation by appointing Habib Beye as their new head coach, effectively ruling out Chelle’s move to the Stade Vélodrome.
The uncertainty surrounding Chelle’s future continues to cast a shadow over the Nigeria national football team, especially with a FIFA international window approaching next month.
Nigeria is also awaiting the outcome of a FIFA inquiry into the DR Congo national football team case, which could potentially open a pathway to the World Cup playoffs.
With just one year remaining on his contract and the Nigeria Football Federation yet to finalise an extension, speculation about Chelle’s long-term future remains unresolved.
While the federation has expressed its intention to retain him, it must act swiftly with a formal contract offer to bring clarity and stability.
