A grieving father, Henry Airenekhuemen, has raised alarm over the death of his son, Mattias, who was found dead under unclear circumstances at a hotel in the Ajao Estate area of Lagos State.
Airenekhuemen said his son had attended a pool party at the hotel on Saturday evening, where he was reportedly selling tickets to earn money.
He explained that the family became worried after receiving a call that Mattias had been rushed to the Isolo General Hospital and that a relative was urgently needed.
According to the father, he arrived at the hospital only to discover that his son was already lifeless in the vehicle that conveyed him to the facility.
He was told that Mattias had drowned in the hotel’s swimming pool, but the explanation immediately raised doubts within the family.
The father said a friend who accompanied Mattias to the hotel claimed he left him briefly with a lady and later returned to find him missing.
The friend reportedly said Mattias’ phone was found charging at their sitting area before his body was eventually discovered in the swimming pool.
Airenekhuemen expressed suspicion over the circumstances surrounding his son’s death, citing what he described as unusual physical signs that did not fully align with the drowning claim.
He said the family promptly reported the matter to the police.
Police officers later visited the hospital, documented the incident, and moved the body to the morgue.
The father also disclosed that officers subsequently inspected the hotel premises, where questions were raised about safety measures, including the presence of a pool supervisor or diver at the time of the incident.

He said three individuals, including the hotel manager, a woman last seen with the deceased, and the friend who claimed to have found the body, have been detained by the police for questioning.
The family further alleged that someone claiming to be a staff member of the hotel contacted them in what appeared to be an attempt to privately resolve the matter.
The father also questioned why activities at the hotel reportedly continued despite the discovery of his son’s body.
When visited, the hotel appeared largely inactive, with a staff member stating that the facility was undergoing renovation and had been temporarily shut down.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the Lagos State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The incident has renewed public concern over safety standards and supervision in hotels and recreational centres across Lagos, as investigations into the young man’s death continue.
