Soludo Orders Demolition of 10,000 Onitsha Market Shops, Gives Traders 14 Days

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has issued a 14-day ultimatum to traders at Onitsha Main Market, marking over 10,000 shops for demolition.

The decision comes after the governor observed that many traders continued to close their shops on Mondays, defying the government’s directive to end the sit-at-home linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

During an unscheduled visit to the market, Governor Soludo expressed frustration over the persistent closures, describing them as a threat to economic activity and public order in the state.

He warned that traders must either open their shops from Monday to Saturday or relocate elsewhere.

Traders at the market expressed shock and concern over the short notice. Uzochukwu Joseph Okoye, a clothing shop owner, said, “Two weeks is too short.

We cannot move or find alternatives in such a short time. We need at least a year to plan and relocate properly.”

Many traders highlighted challenges affecting their businesses, including limited transportation options, closed banks, and low customer turnout on Mondays.

They appealed to the government to address these issues to ensure smooth operations.
Okoye further warned that marking over 10,000 shops for demolition could affect up to 50,000 families, leaving them stranded without livelihoods.

He pleaded with the governor to reconsider the timeframe to allow traders to continue contributing to the state’s economy while planning for relocation.

Despite the concerns, Governor Soludo has remained firm on enforcing the demolition order, insisting that the Onitsha Main Market must be reorganized to restore order and promote business activities.
