Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has said she is not actively seeking to remarry, describing marriage as “overrated” based on her personal experiences and observations.
The actress shared her views during a recent interview on Naija FM, where she spoke about relationships and the societal pressure often placed on marriage. According to her, long courtships do not always guarantee lasting unions.
I’ve seen people date for 15 or 17 years, get married, and after two or three years they break up. Sometimes you wonder if they should have just stayed together without marrying,” she said.
Jegede explained that although she is not completely closed off to marriage, she no longer feels the need to force it or make it the centre of her happiness.
“If it comes, it comes. I’m not looking for it. I’ve learned not to say never,” she added.
She also spoke about what she described as growing intolerance within marriages, noting that both partners often insist on their rights at the expense of understanding.
“There’s a lot of intolerance. The wife claims her rights, the husband does the same,” she said.
The actress advised people to prioritise their personal happiness and do what works best for them. “Do what makes you happy.
If you find someone you like and it works for you, just stay,” she stated.
Yvonne Jegede was previously married to actor and film producer Olakunle ‘Abounce’ Fawole.
The marriage ended in 2019, less than a year after it began, and they have a son together.
Her comments have since generated widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians debating marriage, relationships and evolving social values.
