The late singer Mohbad’s family has prohibited his widow, Wunmi, from using their surname.
Wunmi has been officially barred from using Aloba, her late husband’s surname, until a DNA test confirms the paternity of their son, Liam.
The decision comes amid an ongoing paternity dispute that intensified after Mohbad’s controversial death on September 12, 2023.
Mohbad passed away shortly after receiving an injection administered by an auxiliary nurse, sparking widespread public concern. His body was later exhumed for an autopsy amid mounting calls for clarity. However, in May 2025, the investigation hit a major setback when pathologists announced that they were unable to determine the exact cause of his death.
Meanwhile, in a new development, the family head, Omolayo Aloba, in a statement jointly signed with the late singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, restricted Wunmi from using the family name.
They argued that Omowunmi was not legally married to Mohbad, stating that no statutory or customary marriage was contracted, as the required Yoruba traditional rites — including the payment of bride price — were never completed.
The family also appointed Oladayo Ogungbe as the exclusive legal representative for the DNA case and Mohbad’s estate, while maintaining Wahab Shittu as the counsel responsible for all engagements with investigative authorities probing the singer’s death.
The statement further noted that Wunmi and the child would be incorporated into the estate administration once the DNA test establishes Liam as Mohbad’s biological son.
