The family of late gospel singer Omije Ojumi has addressed circulating claims about the cancellation of her burial rites, insisting that they never solicited funds and calling on the public to respect the family’s privacy.
Speaking at a service of songs and artistes’ night, the singer’s brother-in-law, Femi Eretan, explained that the family decided to independently manage the burial after disagreements arose with some members of the gospel music community.
He stressed that the family remains united and calm, adding, “Many people are crying more than the bereaved.”
Eretan said that the family initially considered holding the burial within a week, following suggestions from some artistes.
This decision was influenced by the family head’s fragile health, the emotional strain of the loss, and the desire to avoid keeping the late singer’s remains in the morgue for too long.

However, after careful discussion, the family concluded that a thoughtfully planned and dignified burial was more appropriate, especially as Omije Ojumi was survived by her husband and children.
Attempts to communicate this decision to the artistes’ group reportedly failed, with some members declining engagement.
Eretan also condemned a viral video by a self-proclaimed prophet that alleged the family was seeking financial support, firmly denying the claims and warning of legal action if evidence is not provided.
Despite the controversy, the family expressed gratitude to artistes who personally honored Omije Ojumi and attended the service of songs, noting that only a few guest artistes were present at the Lagos event.
