Social media influencer and activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has criticised Afrobeats singer Wizkid over what he described as disrespectful remarks toward late music legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
In a video that has since gone viral on social media, VDM lamented what he called Nigeria’s poor culture of honouring its music legends.
He argued that while other countries celebrate their pioneers, Nigerian artistes who speak up on industry or national issues are often ignored or insulted and tagged as “past glory.”
VDM’s comments come amid the ongoing online clash between Wizkid and Seun Kuti, Fela’s son. According to him, Wizkid’s comments encouraged fans to attack the legacy of the Afrobeat pioneer, a situation he said could have been avoided with more restraint.

Addressing comparisons between Wizkid and Fela, especially around Grammy Awards, VDM dismissed claims that Wizkid’s win places him above the late icon.
He noted that Wizkid won the Grammy as a featured artiste on Beyoncé’s Brown Skin Girl, arguing that the recognition was largely influenced by Beyoncé’s global stature.
He, however, praised Burna Boy and Tems, stating that their Grammy wins were based on individual musical efforts and artistic merit.
VDM also defended Fela against criticisms of his personal life, insisting that such controversies should not overshadow his immense contributions to music, culture and political consciousness in Africa.
He concluded that Fela Kuti’s influence, alongside that of the Kuti family, remains unmatched by many contemporary Nigerian artistes.
