Fresh details have emerged following the killing of Mr. Igwe Akuma Akwu, a former President-General of the National Association of Ohafia Students (NAOS), who was reportedly shot dead on January 2, 2026.
Akwu, a young indigene of the Ndi Uma compound in Okon-Aku, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, was attacked by unidentified gunmen, an incident that triggered anger among residents and led to the destruction of property in the area.
In response, the Abia State Police Command confirmed the arrest of several suspects connected to the unrest. The Command also deployed two tactical teams to the community to restore calm and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing as residents continue to call for justice and lasting security in the community.
But fresh details from social media posts made by the late Igwe Akuma Akwu on December 30, 2025, reveal that the former President-General had earlier raised an alarm, notifying the government and security agencies that his life as well as the lives of his people was under serious threat.
In the post shared just three days before his death, Igwe Akuma Akwu recounted that he had been brutally assaulted in January 2025 by a group of thugs allegedly working for a powerful individual, stressing that the incident left him deeply concerned for his safety.
He also recounted that his Toyota Corolla was allegedly set ablaze on October 28, 2025, by a group said to be boasting of its influence and connections within government circles. In the same post, he further raised concern that his five-year-old cousin had gone missing following the attack.
He concluded by warning that his life might be in danger as a result of making the situation public.
Meanwhile, human rights organisations, traditional leaders, and youth groups have called for calm while urging security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.
The Executive Director of the Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy & Development (FENRAD), Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, in a strongly-worded press statement issued on Sunday, demanded the arrest and prosecution of all those involved in the killing.
He further called for a comprehensive review of the security response system to earlier reports of threats and warning signs, stressing that such measures are necessary to prevent a repeat of similar tragedies.
According to Nwafor, FENRAD is also insisting on deliberate accountability for any negligence or lapses that may have led to the failure to safeguard the deceased.
