Tragedy as Kidnapped Edo Seminarian, Emmanuel Alabi, Reportedly Dies in Captivity

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has announced the tragic passing of Emmanuel Alabi, one of the three junior seminarians kidnapped by armed men earlier this year.

The Diocese confirmed late Tuesday that Emmanuel Alabi has died while in the custody of his abductors, following several months of captivity, according to a statement from Rev. Fr. Linus Imoedemhe, Assistant Director of Communications.

Three seminarians — Japhet Jesse, Joshua Aleobua, and Emmanuel Alabi — were abducted on July 10, 2025, from the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivianokpodi, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.

Japhet Jesse was reportedly released shortly after the incident, following ransom payment by his family. However, Joshua Aleobua and Emmanuel Alabi remained in captivity for more than three months, with reports suggesting the Church refused to pay ransom demanded by the kidnappers.

In his message, Rev. Fr. Imoedemhe thanked God for the safe return of the freed captives, even as he lamented the tragic loss of Alabi.

He noted that Japhet Jesse had earlier regained freedom, followed by the release of Joshua Aleobua on November 4, 2025.
“While we rejoice over their safe return, it is with profound grief that we announce the death of seminarian Emmanuel Alabi, who, sadly, did not survive the ordeal,” he stated.

In his reaction to the heartbreaking development, the Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Most Rev. Gabriel Dunia, conveyed deep sorrow over the loss of the young seminarian.
He appealed to security agencies to strengthen their operations to safeguard lives and property, noting that the current surge in insecurity across the nation remains extremely troubling.
Bishop Dunia further called on political leaders to set aside partisan agendas and prioritize national security and the welfare of citizens, particularly as the 2027 general elections draw nearer.

The Diocese of Auchi reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to faith, peace, and justice, expressing confidence in God’s mercy to comfort the bereaved family, the seminary community, and everyone touched by this painful loss, the statement
