President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally transmitted the 2026 statutory budget of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to the Senate for consideration and approval.
The request was presented to lawmakers during Tuesday’s plenary session after the National Assembly resumed from a three-week recess.
The letter conveying the proposal was read on the floor of the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Lawmakers had previously gone on recess to enable various committees carry out scrutiny of the 2026 budget proposals from government ministries, departments, and agencies.
Under Nigeria’s constitutional arrangement, the National Assembly holds legislative authority over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This means the Senate and House of Representatives are responsible for reviewing and approving the territory’s annual budget.
A similar process took place last year when President Tinubu presented the 2025 FCTA Appropriation Bill, which was valued at ₦1.7 trillion, to the upper legislative chamber for approval.
In the letter read during plenary, the President cited the constitutional provision guiding the submission of the proposal.

He said: “Pursuant to Section 299 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which vests legislative powers over the Federal Capital Territory on the National Assembly, I hereby present the FCT budget proposal to the Senate for consideration.”
The President explained that the proposed budget focuses on key development sectors aimed at improving the living conditions of residents in the capital territory.
According to him, priority areas include healthcare services, job creation, youth empowerment, social welfare programmes, education infrastructure, and increased agricultural productivity.
Tinubu noted that the spending plan is designed to drive socio-economic development across the FCT while improving the welfare of citizens and lifting more residents out of poverty.
The Senate is expected to begin deliberations on the proposal as part of its legislative oversight responsibilities.
