Enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy has resumed, as disclosed yesterday by the Police Headquarters in Abuja, pending the final determination of the matter currently before the court.
A Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State, on October 2 this year, issued an interim injunction stopping the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from implementing or enforcing the newly announced Tinted Glass Permit Policy, which was slated to begin on October 6, 2025.
The ruling came after an application filed by John Aikpokpo-Martins, who asked the court to restrain the police from proceeding with the policy, describing it as unlawful and excessively burdensome to citizens.
An interim injunction has been issued restraining the Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force, including their officers, agents, or contractors, from enforcing or further implementing the Tinted Glass Permit Policy pending the hearing and determination of the substantive motion before the court, a decision delivered by Justice H. Nganjiwa.
Meanwhile, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said yesterday that the decision to proceed with enforcement followed a careful review of emerging security concerns and the need to ensure the safety of all citizens.
The Force emphasized that the court never restrained the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing existing laws on the use of tinted glass on vehicles.
However, in the interest of responsibility, transparency, and public convenience, enforcement was temporarily suspended to give motorists sufficient time to regularize their documents and complete the registration process without undue pressure.
The Police noted that recent developments have shown a troubling increase in criminal activities carried out using vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass.
“This gap has been exploited to conceal identities and aid criminal activities, with individuals and organized criminal networks leveraging it to perpetrate offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
Considering recent developments, the Nigeria Police Force deems it necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit Policy as a proactive measure to protect our communities.
Accordingly, enforcement will recommence on January 2, 2026.
Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, assures the public that this renewed enforcement will be conducted with the highest level of professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights, and in full compliance with existing laws.
He emphasized that the Force is dedicated to ensuring public safety and enforcing the rule of law, while actively collaborating with all stakeholders to maintain security across Nigeria.
Motorists seeking a Tinted Glass Permit are advised to apply via the approved channels and ensure their vehicles meet all legal requirements.
