“Temporary Abstinence is Not Sobriety” – Ned Nwoko Responds to Regina Daniels’ Drug Test

Senator Ned Nwoko has dismissed the recent drug test result of his wife, actress Regina Daniels, calling it a reflection of temporary abstinence rather than a true sign of recovery.

In a statement issued on Thursday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Nwoko emphasized that addressing issues of recovery and accountability requires more than just public statements; it demands ongoing effort, honesty, and professional intervention. The statement, shared by his communications team, reads:

“Temporary abstinence doesn’t erase the underlying challenges that led to this situation. Recovery and accountability are not things that can be resolved through social media posts. These are long-term commitments that require genuine professional support and real engagement.”

Nwoko also raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the recent drug test, which reportedly showed no traces of illegal substances. He pointed out that previous assessments from two independent, credible centers in Nigeria and South Africa had confirmed the use of drugs and alcohol, findings which were properly documented and will be used in legal proceedings.

“These assessments were thoroughly conducted, formally documented, and will be defended in court, with the institutions involved being subpoenaed to testify,” the statement clarified. “To present a later negative result as evidence of no prior substance use is misleading. At best, it reflects a period of abstinence, but it doesn’t erase the need for intervention in the first place.”

This statement follows Regina Daniels’ announcement on social media the previous day, in which she revealed that she had voluntarily undergone a drug test that came back negative for illegal substances. In an emotional video, the actress denied any allegations of drug addiction and warned of potential legal action against those spreading such claims. She further stated that the test was to protect her public image and reassure her children. Daniels acknowledged past use of ecstasy (Molly), but denied abusing harder drugs.

However, Nwoko rejected any attempt to downplay the severity of ecstasy use, asserting that “no matter how it’s framed or redefined, Molly is still a drug.” He further added:

“Rebranding it doesn’t change its chemical nature, its risks, or its effects on judgment and mental stability. And while temporary abstinence, whether for weeks or months, may be helpful, it doesn’t solve the core issues that led to this situation. Recovery is not a one-off event, and accountability cannot be a public performance.”

The senator also detailed that he had explored several private avenues to help his wife before the issue became public, including rehabilitation and structured therapy. Unfortunately, these attempts were unsuccessful due to what he described as her denial of the problem.

Addressing the ongoing custody dispute, Nwoko’s team referred to the court ruling granting him custody of their children, which dismissed claims of human rights violations.

“When the court granted custody to Senator Ned and dismissed all unproven claims of human rights abuse, it also mandated that Regina undergo supervised therapy, with evidence of compliance,” the statement explained. “This wasn’t about creating a public spectacle—it was about allowing Regina the opportunity to seek the help she needed discreetly, so she could maintain a meaningful relationship with her children.”

The statement further clarified that a single test, taken at a chosen time, should not be used to invalidate professionally conducted assessments, which were independently verified.

“The reality here is that addiction and recovery are serious matters that require credible, admissible evidence,” the statement concluded, suggesting that a court could appoint an independent lab to settle any conflicting claims between the parties.

The public dispute between the couple, which began in October 2025, revolves around allegations of domestic violence and coercion, with Regina Daniels accusing the senator of abuse. Nwoko has consistently denied the claims, stating that their marital difficulties stemmed from Daniels’ substance use disorder, citing leaked medical records which allegedly showed traces of drugs like cocaine, marijuana, morphine, and opiates. Although the hospital later disowned the documents, Nwoko’s team stood by their authenticity.

The couple, married in 2019 amidst controversy over their age difference, share two children.
