Super Eagles Head Coach: Êric Chelle
Nigeria’s Super Eagles will kick-start a new chapter under head coach Eric Chelle as they face Iran in an international friendly today, marking the beginning of a rebuilding process following their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speculations had trailed Chelle’s future after the World Cup setback, with reports linking the Franco-Malian tactician to opportunities in Morocco and North African club football.
However, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed such claims, confirming that he will see out the remaining year of his contract.
With no World Cup campaign ahead, the NFF has tasked Chelle with revitalising the squad and preparing it for future competitions.
The friendly matches against Iran and Jordan form a crucial part of that rebuilding phase.
Chelle initially invited 23 players for the double-header but will proceed with 22 following the withdrawal of Calvin Bassey due to injury. Star striker Victor Osimhen is also absent for the same reason.
The squad blends experience with fresh talent. Captain Wilfred Ndidi leads the team alongside seasoned players like Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon, who bring a wealth of international experience.
In attack, the Super Eagles will rely on Paul Onuachu, Samuel Chukwueze, and Ademola Lookman, while the defence features the likes of Semi Ajayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Zaidu Sanusi, and Bruno Onyemaechi.
Goalkeeping duties will be handled by Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho, with first-choice keeper Stanley Nwabali unavailable.

New faces in the squad include defender Emmanuel Oluwasegun Fernandez and forwards Collins Yira Sor and Philip Otele, all eager to make an impression.
Speaking ahead of the clash, debutant Yira Sor expressed excitement about representing Nigeria, describing it as a dream come true.
“Playing for Nigeria is a huge honour. I am ready to give my best and contribute to the team’s success,” he said, adding that his pace and link-up play will benefit the squad.
The Super Eagles will face Iran at 2:00 p.m. Nigerian time today, before taking on Jordan on Tuesday. Both matches are part of preparations for future international competitions.
Nigeria last met Iran at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where both sides played out a goalless draw.
Meanwhile, Iran defender Hossein Abarghouei has described the fixture as a crucial test for his team ahead of the World Cup. He noted that despite external challenges, including geopolitical tensions, the team remains focused and well-prepared.
“Our training has been positive, and we are ready to compete. This match is an important step towards our World Cup ambitions,” he said.
Both teams will be aiming for strong performances as they continue their preparations for upcoming global competitions.
