Former Super Eagles Head Coach: Jo Bonfrere
Former Super Eagles head coach, Jo Bonfrere, has called on Nigeria’s national team to immediately begin preparations for the 2030 and 2034 FIFA World Cups following their failure to qualify for the 2026 edition.
Speaking in a recent interview, Bonfrere emphasized the need for a long-term strategy, urging the team to move past the disappointment of missing out on the next World Cup.
Nigeria, three-time African champions, will be absent from the 2026 FIFA World Cup scheduled to be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
This marks the second consecutive time the Super Eagles will not feature at the global tournament.

The team had earlier failed to qualify for the 2022 edition in Qatar after losing out to their long-time rivals, the Ghana national football team.
More recently, hopes of returning to the global stage were dashed after Nigeria suffered a penalty shootout defeat to the DR Congo national football team in the final round of the African playoffs last November.
Reacting to these setbacks, Bonfrere insisted that the focus must now shift toward building a stronger and more competitive team for future tournaments.
“The Super Eagles must put the 2026 World Cup disappointment behind them. Preparation for 2030 and 2034 must start now,” he stated.
His remarks underline the growing call for structural reforms and early planning within Nigerian football to restore the team’s competitiveness on the global stage.
